Consultation and staff training services to Community Care Alliance in Woonsocket, RI.
Review of Individual Behavior Plans as part of the Peer Review Committee for community based clients of Seven Hills of RI. These plans typically use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) oriented approaches for the developmentally disabled adults with varied ongoing behavior and psychiatric problems . Dr. Ahmed, through years of his work experience at Wrentham Developmental Center, and having undertaken CEU trainings on ABA, and through more recent experience of conducting ABA oriented evaluations for a RI Agency serving developmentally disabled adults in community, has developed an expertise in reviewing these reports, drawing from his years of experience of working with challenging mental health clients. More importantly he is able to advocate for incorporation of elements of Mind Stimulation Therapy (MST) , a model that he pioneered through years of his clinical work experience with diverse clinical populatons. The MST model was further refined and developed through years of his collaboration with Professor Charles Boisvert of Rhode Island College, a former student-externs of his, and with whom he has had many collaborative publications. More recently, he co-authored a book with Dr. Boisvert: Mind Stimulation Therapy: Cognitive Intervention for Persons with Schizophrenia. The MST model has wide applications to “challenging mental health clients” of all ages, including children and adolescents with behavior disorders, dual diagnosed substance abuse populations, and geriatric psychiatric clients in nursing homes. The foreword to Mind Stimulation Therapy book and the two published reviews are by eminent psychiatrists, thus attesting to a cross-discipline support and advocacy for the model.
Currently, Community Care Alliance is working on a proposal for having Dr. Ahmed provide an ongoing training series for staff (professional and para professionals) across clinical programs on the use of Mind Stimulation Therapy that they can incorporate in their routine work.
Dr Ahmed. is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and School Psychology and he is scheduled to teach a course on Mind Stimulation Therapy in the upcoming school calendar 2016-2017.
Dr. Ahmed co-chairs with Professor Charles Boisvert, Mind Stimulation Therapy Support Group for mental health counseling students and clinicians, which meets on 1st Wednesdays in Rhode Island College.
Professor Charles Boisvert and Dr. Ahmed recently was involved in a 3-hour training program for Eleanor Slater Hospital staff of Institute of Mental Health of RI, and the program was very well received by various mental health clinical staff, and consequently, the Director of Psychology and Clinical Program is working to explore an ongoing staff training program for mental health counselors and therapists of varied disciplines on the application and use of elements of Mind Stimulation Therapy by Professor Boisvert and Dr. Ahmed on an ongoing basis.
